The Choice of Death in Our Lives
Many people are very serious about planning their future: education, career, business, retirement, and dreams. Yet surprisingly, very few ever plan—or even think about—their own death.
We often ask, “What will I become in life?”
but rarely ask, “If I were to die today, am I ready?”
Death is not something we can avoid. It is not the enemy of life—death is part of life itself.
“Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.” (Hebrews 9:27)
1. Life Is Full of Choices, Including the Choice of Death
The Bible does not hide the reality of death. God speaks openly and honestly about it:
“I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life…” (Deuteronomy 30:19)
God gives humanity a choice. The tragedy is that many people live as if death does not exist.
The question is not when we will die, but how we will die:
- in Christ, or
- outside of Christ.
2. Humanity Pursues Life but Forgets Its Final Destination
Modern society is skilled at extending life, yet often forgets to prepare for eternity.
Jesus warned us:
“What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” (Mark 8:36)
A person may be:
- successful, yet unprepared to die
- wealthy, yet spiritually poor
- alive for many years, yet lost forever
The issue is not how long we live, but how we live—and for whom.
3. Death Is Not the End, but a Doorway
To the world, death feels like a full stop. To the believer, death is a doorway into God’s presence.
Paul boldly declared:
“For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” (Philippians 1:21)
If we live for Christ, death no longer holds terror— it becomes a transition into eternal life.
4. Awareness of Death Produces Wisdom in Life
Thinking about death does not make us hopeless. Instead, it teaches us how to live well.
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12)
Those who understand the reality of death will:
- live humbly
- forgive quickly
- love sincerely
- take sin seriously
Because they know: time is short, eternity is real.
5. Personal Reflection Questions
- If God were to call me today, would I be ready?
- Does my current life reflect my faith in Christ?
- Am I living for this world, or for eternity?
Death is unavoidable, but we can choose how we face it.
Christ has died and risen again, so death no longer has the final word.
Life without Christ is preparation for death.
Life in Christ is preparation for eternity.
Prayer: “Lord, teach us to live rightly, so that we may die well.”
Superb and very thought provoking !
