Calling & Ministry : Born in England as a cobbler, William Carey felt God's call to missions after reading Captain Cook's voyages. Despite opposition from his denomination, he sailed to India in 1793, becoming the first English Protestant missionary to India. Ministry Work : Carey served 41 years in India without returning home. He translated the Bible into Bengali, Sanskrit, and over 40 other languages and dialects. He established Serampore College, fought against sati (widow burning), and promoted education for all castes. Sacrifices: Left his family initially, faced extreme poverty, lost his eldest son Felix to dysentery, and endured his wife Dorothy's mental illness in the harsh Indian climate. Impact: Known as the "Father of Modern Missions," his work opened India to Protestant missions. His linguistic contributions remain foundational to Indian Christianity.
